Muster 3 consists of linen yarn that Selina Zürrer wove into a curtain for an exhibition in the Neubühl Werkbundsiedlung in Zurich.
The pattern of the curtain imitates the pattern of an original wallpaper in the Experimentierhaus of the estate. The wallpaper is composed of horizontal and vertical lines in black and orange that intersect at irregular intervals and evoke the appearance of a loosely woven textile.
When moving into the apartments, residents of the Werkbundsiedlung were able to choose from different wallpapers and colour palettes. The estate was conceived not only architecturally, but also in terms of interior design as a coherent overall concept. This approach was also reflected in the Wohnausstellungen organised by the Swiss Werkbund, in which architecture, furniture, textiles and colour concepts were presented together. Part of these exhibitions was also a weaving atelier, set up by Lilli Humm and Flora Steiger.
By translating the wallpaper pattern into an actual textile and weaving it by hand on a loom, Zürrer engages with questions of design and order within the space.
Following the exhibition, Muster 3 is intended to enter the archive of the Swiss Werkbund, situating the work within the historical framework it references.
